This depends on the size of the team. "Two pizza" sized team can hardly afford lead developer whose only responsibility is keeping "birds-eye view".

On dev team everyone should contribute to the code. There can be separate project manager, who can span many teams and "sit in the meetings".

Of course, there is always managerial path for the career, and "doing less" by hands may see lead developer then project manager as natural way.
