One does not need to engage in premature optimization if one has a habit of writing efficient code. And I guess optimizing oneself to become one who writes optimized code without wasting extra time can't be called premature optimization. It's called professionalism. It is indeed valuable to practice this approach, as without such practice, how can one learn to optimize when it all of a sudden becomes a necessity?
