Not sure which approaches you call the religion, but there is a consensus in the software engineering, that certain practices work better than lack of practices (in one form or another) and there are also standards created regarding software quality.

Nobody questions whether a surgeon should know about hygiene and wash hands before performing scheduled surgery even though manager may want to cut that ritual to the minimum because you need to pay them and there is a rush as always.

And I guess surgeons not following those practices will be called incompetent (or even sued) even if they work for a medical startup.

It's not about religion, it's about engineering.
