Nice metaphor about constellation! Exposure to arts (including math) and design, music, literature, crafts, science, pseudoscience, nature, philosophy, ... makes one a better specialist in any even slightly creative/intellactual field.

Developing software is actually about discovering some theory behind the "real life", and transferring that knowledge to the source code. Specific language syntax, code organization, and other technicalities can help or hinder those efforts. I believe not understanding this is the main cause developers remain "average".
